Datalink Services provider, Reports Fourth Quarter & Full Year Operating Results.

For the fourth quarter, revenues were $51.8 million compared to $48.2 million for the prior-year period. Revenues for the full year were $178.1 million compared to $195.6 million for the prior year. Datalink’s results for the 2009 fourth quarter and full year include $4.4 million of revenues from the value added reseller business of Incentra, LLC, which the company acquired on December 17, 2009.

GAAP Results

On a GAAP basis, the company reported a net loss of $158,000, or $0.01 per diluted share, for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2009. This compares to net earnings of $843,000, or $0.07 per diluted share, in the fourth quarter of 2008. For the year ended December 31, 2009, the company reported a net loss of $555,000, or $0.04 per diluted share, compared to net earnings of $3.4 million, or $0.27 per diluted share, for the year ended December 31, 2008. Included in the 2009 results was a $624,000, or $0.03 per share, charge for cash and non-cash items related to the severance agreement with Datalink’s former President and CEO. Excluding the third quarter charge, 2009 net earnings would have totalled $69,000.

Non-GAAP Results

Non-GAAP net earnings for the fourth quarter of 2009 were $1.3 million, or $0.10 per diluted share, compared to non-GAAP net earnings of $1.1 million, or $0.09 per diluted share, in the fourth quarter of 2008. For the year ended December 31, 2009, the company reported non-GAAP net earnings of $1.8 million, or $0.14 per diluted share, compared to non-GAAP net earnings of $4.5 million, or $0.36 per diluted share, for 2008. Included in the 2009 results was a $329,000, or $0.02 per share, charge for cash items related to the severance agreement with Datalink’s former President and CEO. Non-GAAP earnings per share exclude the effect of purchase accounting adjustments from the Incentra VAR Business acquisition to deferred revenue, acquisition and transition costs related to the acquisition, stock-based compensation expense, amortization of acquisition related intangible assets, and the related effects on income taxes. Outlook

The company ended the fourth quarter of 2009 with a record backlog of $46 million. This backlog includes approximately $9 million carried over from the Incentra VAR Business acquisition in December 2009. Based on this backlog and the current business environment, the company expects revenues to be between $62 million and $66 million for the first quarter of 2010. Datalink’s first quarter expenses typically increase due to payroll taxes, accounting for employee benefits and audit related costs. In addition, the company expects to incur some transition expenses associated with the Incentra acquisition, through the end of the quarter. As a result of the sequentially higher expenses and transition costs applied to the forecasted range of revenues for the quarter, the company expects a net loss per diluted share in the first quarter of 2010 to be between $0.08 and $0.04 per diluted share on a GAAP basis, and a net loss of between $0.02 and net earnings of $0.02 per diluted share on a non-GAAP basis. This compares to revenues of $39.9 million with a GAAP loss of $0.05 per diluted share and a non-GAAP loss of $0.02 per diluted share in the first quarter of 2009.

Non-GAAP earnings per share exclude the effect of purchase accounting adjustments from the Incentra VAR Business acquisition to deferred revenue, acquisition and transition costs related to the acquisition, stock-based compensation expense, amortization of acquisition related intangible assets, and the related effects on income taxes. The company estimates this total effect will be approximately $.06 per diluted share for the first quarter of 2010.

Trend Micro Inc. announces St. Lawrence College Trend Micro Enterprise Security to Further Educational Mission, Compl.

Trend Micro Inc. announced today that St. Lawrence College, in Ontario, Canada, has deployed Trend Micro(TM) Enterprise Security powered by the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network(TM) to protect students and staff from malware, spam, phishing and Web threats.

With more than 800 employees and 6,500 full-time students, St. Lawrence College relies on its robust, technology-rich infrastructure. IT has deployed and managed a variety of technology solutions over the years, striving to create a productive environment for the college community. As part of a major technology refresh initiative, St. Lawrence College underwent an evaluation of Trend Micro(TM) Enterprise Security solutions. The study convinced IT to switch from their previous vendor to Trend Micro.

“Fighting Web threats is a priority for us,” said Michael Zeleny, technical support specialist for the college. “Students love to surf the Web–being able to detect malware and threats faster is always desirable. Trend Micro(TM) OfficeScan(TM) Client-Server Suite gives us Web and file reputation technology that blocks threats before they hit our network, and the Smart Scan Server feature makes new patterns available immediately, without waiting for updates to be pushed down to every endpoint.”

St. Lawrence College now implements Trend Micro Enterprise Security to protect endpoints with Trend Micro OfficeScan Client-Server Suite and to protect messaging for the gateway with Trend Micro InterScan Messaging Security Virtual Appliance.

OfficeScan, powered by the Trend Micro(TM) Smart Protection Network(TM) infrastructure, takes advantage of in-the-cloud threat intelligence to lighten the burdens on security solutions and systems while maximizing protection. OfficeScan has given the college a better performing security solution for every endpoint on the network.

“Our last security solution dragged systems to their knees–OfficeScan is much better in terms of client performance,” said Zeleny. “The memory requirement for OfficeScan clients is low, freeing up processor cycles and memory on our systems, which add up to more performance for user applications. Trend Micro’s cloud technology, such as file and Web reputation, is a good idea. With Smart Protection Network, Trend Micro puts us on a good path.”

St. Lawrence College also utilizes the plug-in architecture of OfficeScan, which makes it easy for St. Lawrence College to deploy new capabilities as needed without having to redeploy the entire OfficeScan solution. IT is currently testing the latest Intrusion Defense Firewall plug-in.

“OfficeScan plug-ins keep the solution streamlined,” said Zeleny. “They are a nice way to give us control of features. We can deploy what we want, and avoid the hard drive and memory overhead for features that we don’t want.”

With the introduction of InterScan Messaging Security Virtual Appliance at the gateway, the college gained protection from spam, viruses, spyware, phishing, blended threats, and data loss resulting from email-borne threats. Filtering capabilities help IT comply with regulations and college policies, and the VMware Ready virtual appliance deployment allows them to lower operating costs in the datacenter.

“Trend Micro messaging security and our virtualized environment have reduced the CPU and memory requirements for security while increasing the spam catch rates and overall protection,” said Zeleny. “The in-the-cloud reputation services detect threats faster, help to mitigate them more quickly, and also reduce the time and resources consumed for updates. It’s really nice to see Trend Micro moving in this direction. With Trend Micro we gained a multilayered spam solution, Web threat protection, and a security vendor that was aligned with our commitment to virtualization.”

The college’s VMware platform has simplified the deployment of solutions such as the security software virtual appliance. “Under VMware, it was very easy to deploy InterScan Messaging Security Virtual Appliance, and it took less than an hour,” said Zeleny.

Today, with its virtualized messaging security solution, IT enjoys a reduction in the time required to manage email security. InterScan Messaging Security Virtual Appliance takes less than 10 minutes a day to check on status, and user complaints about spam and other email security issues have also decreased, resulting in additional time savings for the busy staff.

Data center costs are higher than ever, despite the best efforts of data center managers and IT executives to make changes to the contrary. From greening the data center to offloading certain applications and services to a cloud environment, data center administrators are doing what they can to control costs. While not every effort meets with success, to ignore these steps means even more severely increased costs for the data

Here are 5 of the top ways to reduce your data center costs:

1. Energy reduction. Greening the data center is the first step in reducing your data center costs. The thing is that you need to be smart about the kind of greening you do. Depending on the location of the data center, for example, installing solar panels might not do much good. You may be better off, especially in Northern climates, to install more advanced cooling technology that makes use of the outside air, rather than something like solar panels. The key here is to get the most bang for your greening buck.

2. Virtualization. Virtualization is a great way to free up floor space at your data center. You reduce your power consumption (see #1 above) and you also reduce your ongoing operational costs of keeping some of your servers in production. Virtualization just makes sense in the data center. The key is to make sure that you’re really getting a benefit from virtualization, and that you can maintain the same kinds of performance levels with virtualization that you had prior to the virtualization process.

3. Cloud computing. Like virtualization, utilizing the cloud will reduce the footprint of your data center as well as power consumption. You’ll get similar benefits from cloud computing that you’ll get from virtualization, but you also incur the ongoing service costs as well. Here again, you need to do a cost analysis to make sure you’re really saving money.

4. Rationalize your hardware. Take out systems that are old and underutilized and move their workload to more efficient systems. You can reduce your server count by anywhere from five to 20 percent just by doing this.

5. Consolidate sites. If you have multiple data center sites, you can consolidate them into a smaller number of larger sites. This will, in the long term, provide you with significant savings both in terms of facilities and in terms of increased opportunity for things like virtualization.
