Abiquo, the leading Enterprise Cloud Management software vendor, today announced that, after extensive research among its more than 20,000 customers, open source users and prospects, the top five issues facing enterprises today are:
“By investing in a unified cloud management system, enterprises can truly realize the full benefits of virtualization”
1) Security and Compliance
2) IT Organization Overload
3) Lack of Visibility into Virtual Environments
4) Unrealized Utilization Improvements
5) Vendor Lock-in
Implications of Top Five Virtualization Issues
Companies are moving to virtualization to increase server utilization rates and save money. According to research carried out by IDC in 2009, there was a 16% increase in server virtualization, and this year IDC claims that companies have even begun to adopt a “virtualization first” mentality because IT departments are keen to save money.
Yet Abiquo’s research clearly shows that the five major issues are either preventing companies from virtualizing more of their environments, or are preventing companies from realizing cost savings from their current virtualized environments.
Limiting Virtualization Adoption
Abiquo found that security and compliance concerns were the number one reason why many enterprises limited their virtualization efforts to non-production development and test systems only. For example, while virtual machine portability is highly beneficial from a resilience standpoint, for many organizations it creates a security and compliance nightmare. Effective data separation is difficult, not only to ensure, but also to provably track. Some enterprises attempt to mitigate the problem by creating separate “virtualized islands”, each running on different physical hardware, but this only reduces utilization, and presents a barrier to Cloud adoption.
The provisioning of virtual machines and storage, carried out by IT personnel, also leads to increased security and compliance risks since, unlike in the physical world where applications are both isolated and stay put, in virtualized environments IT must correctly (and repeatedly) determine the correct location in relation to other virtual systems. In short, they must fully understand and act upon the security and compliance requirements each and every time. Since the task is complex and humans are fallible, errors are inevitable. Virtualized environments that offer automated load balancing and fail-over only make the problem worse.
Limiting Virtualization Savings
Abiquo discovered that 4 of the 5 top virtualization issues limited companies’ ability to realize cost savings. For example, in addition to the “virtualized islands” issue described above, utilization decisions made by humans, who determine at least the initial location of every virtual system, rarely if ever produce the most effective utilization plan. For best utilization, a complete re-evaluation of the entire virtualized environment is required every time a virtual system is provisioned, or re-started. IT personnel have neither the time, nor the tools to do this, especially if they are also considering security and compliance.
In most enterprises the IT provisioning team is generally entirely separate from the application team that runs the virtualized system. This disconnect can lead to inefficiency and increased cost. For example, many enterprises that adopt virtualization find that over time a large number of virtual systems have resources allocated, but are no longer being used. Either nobody bothered to tell the infrastructure team, or the desire to “keep it around in case I need it later” prevailed.
Vendor lock-in is a barrier to adoption (for example many US government departments are restricted from using single vendor solutions) which leads to artificially high pricing when using a captive vendor.
Solution to Virtualization Issues
Abiquo believes that most enterprises do not realize there is a viable solution to these issues. An enterprise cloud management solution such as the Abiquo Enterprise Edition provides a bridge between basic virtualization and fully Cloud enabled computing.
“By investing in a unified cloud management system, enterprises can truly realize the full benefits of virtualization”, said Pete Malcolm, Abiquo CEO. “Abiquo is the only solution that addresses all five of the top virtualization issues, dramatically improving utilization to realize cost savings, eliminating security and compliance concerns, substantially reducing the load on the IT organization, gaining visibility into virtual environments and eliminating vendor lock-in – all without any increase in risk.”

Cost management and virtualization top the list of enterprise IT concerns, according to the SHARE survey that will be released at SHARE’s bi-annual conference, SHARE in Boston, August 1-5.
SHARE conducted the survey of more than 160 of IBM’s top customers to review the current state of enterprise IT in terms of where companies are putting the most resources and focus. Results of the study provide industry analysis to help SHARE better shape its programs and events for the greater member — and enterprise IT — community. The information also provides valuable insights to IBM and ISVs (independent software vendors) about issues that concern their customers the most. The survey was conducted during June and July 2010.
“Companies were asked to rank their top 5 concerns, and cost management, especially when it comes to cost reduction and avoidance, continues to be top of mind for these companies,” said Al Williams, the President of SHARE. “The survey reinforces why one of the themes for SHARE in Boston — IT and the Bottom Line — is so important. It’s not enough to just cut costs — the successful enterprise IT professional knows there is a need to demonstrate IT’s value and how it can provide a competitive advantage every day.”
Virtualization ranked as the second biggest concern, with server virtualization the primary focus, followed by storage virtualization and then network virtualization. Cloud computing, another theme for SHARE in Boston, ranked seventh, with Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) identified as the most prominent focus in the cloud, followed by Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS).
Here are the top ten issues from the survey:
1. IT Cost Management
2. Virtualization
3. Improving IT’s value and deriving competitive advantage from IT
4. Enterprise security
5. The aging and demographics of current IT staffs
6. Business continuity planning
7. Cloud computing
8. Regulatory compliance
9. Reinvigorating/repurposing the mainframe
10. Data center energy management
More than 600 technical sessions at SHARE in Boston at the Hynes Convention Center, August 1-5, are focused on the 2010 conference themes — Enterprise Virtualization & Cloud Computing, and IT and the Your Bottom Line. SHARE conferences provide enterprise IT professionals with the latest information and newest innovations in the marketplace. SHARE in Boston attendees at the Hynes Convention Center will meet enterprise IT experts, learn about the latest developments and solutions in the industry, and build relationships with peers experiencing similar challenges.

Stonesoft, a global provider of proven, innovative network security solutions, has identified five ways that organizations can improve cloud computing security. This announcement comes on the heels of recent research released from Gartner, Inc. citing that 60 percent of virtualized servers will be less secure than the physical servers they replace through 2012 (Source: Addressing the Most Common Security Risks in Data Center Virtualization Projects, January 2010).
Today, most organizations deploy virtualization technologies without involving information and network security teams in the initial planning stages. As a result, many organizations are simply retrofitting their virtual networks with existing physical network security strategies and technologies. This lack of foresight and technological preparedness drastically weakens network security, which presents the biggest known challenge to the success of cloud computing with large-scale organizations.
In response, Stonesoft has identified five ways IT teams can protect themselves against cloud security threats and attacks, while helping ensure the success of their cloud computing strategies. They include:
– Federated ID: Inherent in a cloud computing environment is the need for workers to log into multiple applications and services. This presents a formidable security pitfall, as organizations may lose control over their ability to ensure strong authentication at the user level. To mitigate this risk, organizations need “single sign-on” capabilities — such as those provided by the StoneGate SSL VPN — that enable users to access multiple applications and services, including those located outside of the organization in the public cloud, through a single login. With this ability, organizations can streamline security management and ensure strong authentication within the cloud.
– Always-on Connectivity: When the majority of an organization’s critical business data is stored in the cloud, network downtime can shut down business operations. Access to cloud services must be always available, even during maintenance, thus requiring high availability technologies and capabilities such as active/active clustering, dynamic server load balancing and ISP load balancing within the network infrastructure. Organizations should seek technologies that are built into their network solutions, rather than purchase them as standalone products to ensure effectiveness, ease of management and reduced network costs.
– Multi-layer Inspection: The rise of the cloud computing environment and increased sophistication of threats has created a need for a proper layered defense comprised of perimeter protection and intrusion detection and prevention capabilities within the network. Rather than implementing first-generation firewalls to protect the cloud at the perimeter, Stonesoft recommends the deployment of virtual next generation firewall appliances — like the StoneGate Virtual NextGen Firewall — that integrate advanced firewall and IPS capabilities for deep traffic inspection. This will allow organizations to inspect all levels of traffic, from basic Web browsing to peer-to-peer applications and encrypted Web traffic in the SSL tunnel. Additional IPS appliances should be implemented to protect networks from internal attacks that threaten access to the cloud.
Centralized Management: Human error is still the greatest network security threat facing both physical and virtual computing environments. As companies deploy additional network devices to secure their virtual networks, they exponentially increase this risk as device management, monitoring and configuration become more tedious and less organized. For this reason, Stonesoft recommends companies use a single management console to manage, monitor and configure all devices — physical, virtual and third-party.
– Virtual Desktop Protection: More and more organizations are deploying virtual desktops to realize the cost and administration benefits. However, these desktops are just as — if not more — vulnerable than their physical counterparts. To adequately protect virtual desktops, organizations should isolate them from other network segments and implement deep inspection at the network level to prevent both internal and external threats. Those organizations should deploy a multi-pronged approach to security by implementing IPS technology that prevents illegal internal access, protects the clients from malicious servers, as well as providing secure remote access capabilities through IPsec or SSL VPN that protects against unauthorized external access.
Stonesoft currently offers a selection of virtual network security solutions that provide advanced security in the cloud. These include the StoneGate Virtual NextGen Firewall, StoneGate Virtual IPS and StoneGate Virtual SSL VPN. For more information on these solutions, please visit www.stonesoft.com.
